Yamaha RX-V561 5.1 Home Theatre Receiver — 100 Watts a Channel, Two HDMI Inputs, Remote Included

A 500-watt five-channel Yamaha home theatre receiver with HDMI video switching, a properly adjustable subwoofer crossover and 100 watts on every channel, in very good condition and ready to anchor a system today.

Power and Amplification

Yamaha rates the RX-V561 at 100 watts minimum RMS per channel into 8 ohms across front, centre and surround, which is a full 500 watts of system power, and 135 watts per channel at the JEITA maximum. Dynamic power climbs to 110, 130, 160 and 180 watts into 8, 6, 4 and 2 ohms respectively. Those descending-impedance figures are the ones worth reading: a receiver that keeps increasing output as the load gets harder has a power supply with something in reserve, which is what keeps a system composed when a film soundtrack asks for everything at once.

Setup and Room Correction

Where this receiver earns its keep for anyone running a subwoofer is the bass management. The crossover is selectable across nine points from 40 Hz to 200 Hz, with a 12 dB per octave high-pass on the front, centre and surround channels and a 24 dB per octave low-pass on the subwoofer output. That is a genuine, adjustable crossover rather than a single fixed 80 Hz setting, and it means the handoff between speakers and subwoofer can be tuned to the speakers actually in the room instead of the ones the designer imagined.

Connections

Two HDMI inputs and one HDMI output handle video switching to the display. Audio arrives over the three digital inputs, two optical and one coaxial, which is how sources of this generation were normally connected and takes one additional cable from the same player. All three accept PCM, Dolby Digital and DTS bitstreams at sampling rates up to 96 kHz. For anyone bringing legacy high-resolution discs to the system, the multi-channel analogue input accepts a full discrete feed from an SACD or DVD-Audio player, and there is a dedicated subwoofer pre-out alongside it.

Radique’s Take

The rest is the substantial Yamaha engineering of the period. Frequency response runs from 10 Hz to 100 kHz within 3 dB, total harmonic distortion is quoted at 0.06 percent or less at 50 watts into 8 ohms, and signal to noise measures 98 dB or better at 200 mV with the effects off, rising to 100 dB at 250 mV. Channel separation is 60 dB at 1 kHz. Bass and treble each adjust plus or minus 10 dB. A compatible Yamaha remote control is included, tested and confirmed to operate all primary functions. AM and FM tuning are on board.

A capable and well-specified five-channel receiver from Yamaha’s strongest run of home theatre products, with the power supply and the bass management to build a real system around.
