The Design

The F3 is a two-way floorstander built around a single 6.5 inch bass and midrange driver and a 1 inch textile dome tweeter, crossed over at 2.7 kHz by a fourth-order Linkwitz-Riley network. That is a deliberately simple recipe, and simple is what makes it work: one driver covering everything below the tweeter means no midrange handover in the region the ear is most sensitive to, and a fourth-order acoustic Linkwitz-Riley is the crossover you choose when you want the drivers to sum flat and stay in phase through the crossing region rather than when you want to save money on parts.

What It Sounds Like

What that buys you in practice is a speaker that is genuinely undemanding. Sensitivity is 89 dB and the load is a nominal 8 ohms, with Tannoy recommending anything from 10 to 100 watts. An entry-level AV receiver drives these properly. So does a vintage integrated of fifty watts a side. There is no hidden impedance dip to catch out a modest amplifier, and no need to buy power before you can hear what the speaker does — which is the opposite of how most floorstanders in this size behave.

The Cabinet

The cabinet is worth a moment because it is not built the way the price suggests. The carcase is 15 mm particle board, internally cross-braced, but the front baffle is stepped up to 19 mm MDF, which is the panel that matters most: it is the one carrying both drivers and the one whose resonance you hear directly. Twenty-three litres of internal volume in a column only 204 mm wide gets the response down to a quoted 35 Hz, and the reflex port fires from the front. That last detail is a practical gift rather than a specification. A front-ported speaker is not fighting the wall behind it, so these can sit close to a wall, in an alcove, or in the corner of a room that a rear-ported tower would boom in. For anyone who has had to choose between good bass and a usable living room, that is the whole argument.

The Apple Finish

The Apple finish is the reason to take this pair specifically. Tannoy offered these in exactly two finishes, Apple and Dark Oak, and the dark one is what turns up. A light, warm, open-grained finish suits a room with pale floors or light furniture in a way black ash and dark oak simply do not, and on a tower — where the cabinet is a piece of furniture standing in the room rather than a box on a shelf — that matters more than it does on a bookshelf speaker. Grilles are included, as Tannoy supplied on every model in the range.
