A pair of Tannoy Mercury F3 floorstanders in the light Apple finish, eight inches wide and easy enough to drive that a modest receiver will get everything out of them.

The Design

The F3 is a two-way floorstander built around a single 6.5 inch bass and midrange driver and a 1 inch textile dome tweeter, crossed over at 2.7 kHz by a fourth-order Linkwitz-Riley network. That is a deliberately simple recipe, and simple is what makes it work: one driver covering everything below the tweeter means no midrange handover in the region the ear is most sensitive to, and a fourth-order acoustic Linkwitz-Riley is the crossover you choose when you want the drivers to sum flat and stay in phase through the crossing region rather than when you want to save money on parts.

What It Sounds Like

What that buys you in practice is a speaker that is genuinely undemanding. Sensitivity is 89 dB and the load is a nominal 8 ohms, with Tannoy recommending anything from 10 to 100 watts. An entry-level AV receiver drives these properly. So does a vintage integrated of fifty watts a side. There is no hidden impedance dip to catch out a modest amplifier, and no need to buy power before you can hear what the speaker does — which is the opposite of how most floorstanders in this size behave.

The Cabinet

The cabinet is worth a moment because it is not built the way the price suggests. The carcase is 15 mm particle board, internally cross-braced, but the front baffle is stepped up to 19 mm MDF, which is the panel that matters most: it is the one carrying both drivers and the one whose resonance you hear directly. Twenty-three litres of internal volume in a column only 204 mm wide gets the response down to a quoted 35 Hz, and the reflex port fires from the front. That last detail is a practical gift rather than a specification. A front-ported speaker is not fighting the wall behind it, so these can sit close to a wall, in an alcove, or in the corner of a room that a rear-ported tower would boom in. For anyone who has had to choose between good bass and a usable living room, that is the whole argument.

The Apple Finish

The Apple finish is the reason to take this pair specifically. Tannoy offered these in exactly two finishes, Apple and Dark Oak, and the dark one is what turns up. A light, warm, open-grained finish suits a room with pale floors or light furniture in a way black ash and dark oak simply do not, and on a tower — where the cabinet is a piece of furniture standing in the room rather than a box on a shelf — that matters more than it does on a bookshelf speaker. Grilles are included, as Tannoy supplied on every model in the range.

The Tannoy story, 1926 to today

Guy R. Fountain founded the company in London in 1926 as the Tulsemere Manufacturing Company, making rectifiers and battery chargers for radio sets. It became Tannoy in 1928, a name taken from the tantalum alloy in his rectifier.

The Dual Concentric. Ronnie Rackham's Dual Concentric driver first appeared as the "Monitor Black" in 1947 or 1948 (sources differ). The Monitor Silver, Red and Gold generations followed through the 1950s and 1960s, then the HPD in 1974.

Scotland. Harman International bought Tannoy in 1974, and production moved from London to Coatbridge, Scotland, in 1976. Managers bought the business in 1981, Tannoy merged with Goodmans in the mid-1980s and joined Denmark's TC Group in 2002.

Today. Music Group, later Music Tribe, bought TC Group in 2015. From 2016 the lower-priced ranges, such as Mercury, were made in China, while Prestige stayed in Scotland, where Tannoy's headquarters and assembly are now in Hamilton.

Which Tannoy is which?

1970s HPD cabinets: the Arden, Berkeley, Cheviot, Devon and Eaton, all with Dual Concentric drivers. The Arden, Cheviot and Eaton were reissued as the "Legacy" series in 2017.

Mercury (early 1980s onward): the entry range, through many generations. Our best-selling mx3, mx2, mx1 and mxC come from this family.

Profile (1991 to 1994) and Sensys DC (about 2004): Dual Concentric ranges between Mercury and Prestige.

Revolution (1998 onward): cherry-veneered models such as the R1, R2 and R3.

Prestige (1980s onward): the traditional-styled Dual Concentric range, such as the Westminster and Stirling, later in Gold Reference versions.

Definition (2009): birch-ply Dual Concentric models built in Scotland, such as the DC8 and DC10T.

Buying used Tannoy: what to check

HPD-era surrounds. The surrounds on 1970s drivers rot with age, and many have been replaced. Ask what was replaced and with what.

Dating the drivers. Frame colour alone is not a reliable guide to a Dual Concentric's age; construction details date it better.

Reused names. An Arden, Cheviot or Eaton may be a 1970s original or a 2017 Legacy reissue.

Origin label. From 2016, Mercury and Revolution models were made in China and Prestige in Scotland. Check the label if it matters to you.
