Luxman LV-90 — Lux Corporation’s Compact Integrated, with a Real Phono Stage
A compact, elegantly restrained integrated amplifier built by Lux Corporation in Tokyo, aimed at the listener who wants clean, well-engineered stereo amplification without a rack full of hardware.
Luxman produced the LV-90 in 1986 and 1987, and it carries the design language the company was known for at its best: a black faceplate under a brushed light-grey top cover, a large volume control calibrated in decibels of attenuation rather than arbitrary numbers, and a front panel that stays quiet until you need it. Total harmonic distortion is quoted at 0.008 percent and line-level frequency response runs from 10 Hz to 80 kHz.
CD Straight
The feature worth knowing about is CD Straight. Engaged, it routes the CD input directly through to the volume control, bypassing the tone control and loudness circuitry entirely for the shortest signal path the amplifier can offer. Leave it off and the full bass, treble, balance, and loudness controls remain available. It is a genuine audiophile provision on an amplifier of this size, and it means one machine serves both the listener who wants tone controls and the one who wants none.
Inputs and Sources
Source provision is generous. Dedicated CD and tuner inputs sit alongside an AV/auxiliary input, a moving magnet phono input with ground post, and two complete tape loops with independent record and monitor paths — including a dedicated dubbing function for copying between decks. A headphone jack is provided on the front panel.
The A and B Speaker Terminals
The speaker arrangement deserves a plain word. There are two sets of terminals, A and B, wired in parallel with no front-panel selector: whichever set is connected receives signal. Used singly, either set accommodates speakers from 8 to 16 ohms. The rear panel specifies a 16 ohm minimum per speaker if both sets are driven at once, so in practice most systems will use one pair, with the second set standing ready for a straightforward swap.
Condition
Cosmetically this example is in very good condition. The faceplate is very clean and presents well. There is scratching along the top left edge of the cabinet, visible on close inspection and noted here so there are no surprises; it does not affect the front-facing appearance or the operation of the amplifier in any way.
Condition and Service
This unit has been thoroughly inspected and tested to confirm full functionality.
Why This One
A genuinely well-made Japanese integrated, compact enough to sit almost anywhere and specified well enough to keep good company — a sensible heart for a turntable-and-speakers system that does not need to announce itself. Available now.

MartinLogan Motion 15 Bookshelf Speakers – Folded Motion, Boxed
The reason to want these is the tweeter — MartinLogan's Folded Motion driver is a pleated ribbon rather than a dome, so it squeezes air out from between its pleats and barely has to move. A 5.25-inch aluminium cone below it, 92 dB sensitivity, and the high-gloss black clean of the swirls these show so readily. Original boxes included.
Paradigm Monitor 3 v3 Bookshelf Speakers – 8″ Woofer, Canada
An 8-inch woofer in a cabinet small enough to sit on a stand — a 210 mm ICP cone on a die-cast chassis, with a third-generation titanium dome on the Studio-series waveguide faceplate, crossed at 2.0 kHz. Low frequency extension to 38 Hz and 91 dB room sensitivity, so 15 watts drives them and 150 is just headroom. Built in Canada, in Black Ash. Very good condition.

PSB Alpha B Bookshelf Speakers – Metal Grilles, Made in Canada
A 5.25-inch polypropylene woofer under a 0.75-inch aluminium dome in a rear-ported cabinet just 6.5 inches wide, with perforated steel grilles that survive children and pets. 89 dB anechoic, 91 dB in room. This is the nineteenth pair through our doors since 2018. Graded fair because one cabinet has been repaired — that is the only reason it sits below our usual $195. Both drivers are good and the pair images properly.
